National Day of Civic Hacking
Be part of LA’s first-ever civic hackathon June 1-2! Register at http://bit.ly/hack4la. Teams will compete in a 2-day coding competition to win cash and tech prizes totaling more than $10,000! Developer mentors and judges from AT&T, Google, Scopely, Factual, and ESRI will support coders during the weekend and determine the winners. Teams can choose to respond to local or national data challenges, or work on their own projects that incorporate civic data and community impact objectives. We’ll have folks on hand from NASA JPL, the Census Bureau, and LA City’s IT Agency to share inspiration and ideas, and we’ll be working with newly-released City of LA datasets. Through Rally Software's "Rally For Impact" initiative, Rally is offering free 1-year subscriptions to AgileZen and Flowdock to all participants of the National Day of Civic Hacking!
Not a coder? Come on Saturday June 1st to check out awesome tech exhibits from Two Bit Circus, LA Makerspace and others. Everyone is welcome!
Registration is FREE and space is limited, so sign up today at http://bit.ly/hack4la
Location: Boyle Heights Technology Youth Center (1600 E 4th St., Los Angeles 90033)
Date and Time:
Hackathon: June 1-2, 10 AM – 6 PM
Tech Exhibits: June 1st only (Saturday) 10AM - 6PM
Who’s creating the event? AT&T provided founding support for this event through their Mobile Hackathon program. will.i.am’s i.am.angel Foundation, along with New Economy Campaigns and many members of Tech4Garcetti have been working together to create the event. Google, Scopely, ESRI, and Factual are providing additional support for prizes and event production and getting their technology staff involved in the event. In addition, local tech companies and organizations including NASA JPL, Nationbuilder, Topspin Media, Citysearch, Beachbody, Lootsie, Datapop, and Carbon5 are providing developer volunteers to serve as coaches and mentors throughout the weekend of hacking. National organizers and sponsors include Code for America, The White House Office of Digital Strategy, Intel and many others.
The event is a call to action for anyone in Los Angeles who wants to make an impact; anyone can get involved, irrespective of professional experience. Projects can address any challenge facing the community: from a mobile app drivers can use to report potholes, to platforms that address food and housing distribution for those in need. The Hack for LA event will illustrate the power of open government practices, particularly where data is readily available to support meaningful collaboration between the public and private sectors.
